German bookkeeper kept residence for a time with Dennis Nevius Simonson (1855-1930) and Mary C. Groome (1857-)

I found something curious in the U.S. 1880 census for Dennis Nevius Simonson and Mary Groome.  They had a bookkeeper from Germany staying with them in Kansas.  Dennis was listed as farming at the time, and this would have been before they had their first child, John Groom Simonson (1881-1946).  I wonder what the story was behind this...

  1. Interesting! Our info is different about John Groome Simonson. Notice the "e' on Groome. There was a daughter before him. Alice Elizabeth b. 6 January 1881 and d.Jan. 1968. She was their first child born near Halstead, Kansas. She never married and held a position in a bank in Halstead, KS. John Groome Simonson was the second child and was born 31 August 1883 and died 1943. Dennis N. Simonson and Mary Groome had 10 children.

  2. Janice,
Very interesting about Alice. The only information our family ever had about Alice was that she left a little inheritance money to John Dennis Simonson's children. John Groome Simonson's daughter said she went with her dad to Kansas for a visit when she was a little girl but only had vague memories about it.

Concerning the "e" on Groome, I am not sure it is well defined as going either way. His headstone in Provo, Utah, reads Groom, but other documents and relatives spell it "Groome." His daughter also could not give me a definitive answer.
